Proclamations on Brazil issued by King José I from 1752 to 1770, and by the future King João VI as prince regent from 1801 to 1811. The subject matter includes slavery, treatment of Amazonian Indians, gold mining in Minas Gerais, and trade. A particularly vivid 24 January 1756 proclamation declares that slaves guilty of using knives are to be sentenced to 100 lashes on ten alternate days.
