an important association copy of the first french edition. Kermit Roosevelt (1889-1943) was engaged to be married to Belle Willard in 1913, but delayed the wedding to accompany his father Theodore Roosevelt on the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition. The explorers traveled the length of a previously uncharted river in Amazonian Brazil (now the Rio Roosevelt or Rio Teodoro), but also encountered malaria and were stalked by the hostile Cinta Largas, and barely escaped with their lives. On his return, Kermit then married Belle in June 1914, and presented her with this strikingly illustrated Brazilian travel narrative three months later. The book apparently passed to their daughter Belle, whose bookplates were removed during rebinding and preserved with the set. Borba de Moraes I:438; Sabin 38273.
