Additional Details

The story of a Brazilian farm which operated without the use of enslaved laborers, years before abolition. João Elisário de Carvalho Montenegro acquired the plantation in 1867 and is regarded as the first in his region to produce coffee with free labor, mostly imported from his native Portugal. None traced in OCLC, though we find one copy held at a library in the Azores, a Portuguese colony.
