first edition (published simultaneously in German and French editions), issued in parts. The author was an artist who went to Brazil as a young man in the 1820s and traveled throughout the country. The narrative section was edited by V.A. Huber from his letters and notes, and the plates were lithographed by Engelmann from original paintings by Rugendas and others. The plates include mountain views, slave camps, ranching, maritime views, and urban scenes. They have been described as "of utmost importance for the study of Brazilian life at the beginning of the nineteenth century" (Borba de Moraes, page II:754, describing the French edition).
