Additional Details

Nearly forty-three years after William Wilberforce presented evidence of the brutality of slavery to Parliament, and following Thomas Clarkson's tireless efforts, the crown put an end to slavery in the West Indies and the rest of her colonies. Built into the act was a clear requirement that all slaves above the age of six years present themselves for apprenticeship. Additionally, the crown put aside £20,000,000 for compensation to the slave owners who could now retain their work force and for a time pay them a modest wage.
