JO MIELZINER (1901-1976)
Fire backdrop. Scenic design for a the 1952 Broadway production of Wish You Were Here, directed by Joshua Logan at the Imperial Theatre. Gouache, watercolor, ink, and wash on paper. 19 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches, sight size, on 15 x 21 1/2-inch sheet. Signed and inscribed by Mielziner to producer Leland Hayward and director Joshua Logan in lower right margin. Includes Mielziner's notes in margins and Local 829 stamp.

Mielziner's design was one of the most elaborate on Broadway at the time, and included a full-sized swimming pool onstage. Due to the extensive construction, the production had a lengthy preview period in New York instead of an out-of-town tryout.
