"BROCKTONIANS NOT GIVEN TO WORSHIP ANCESTORS" (BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS)
Album entitled "Brockton, Historical Descriptive and Picturesque," with more than 100 photographs of this "model city's" industries, august residences, handsome public buildings, and towering churches in addition to general views of it as an emerging industrial center. The photographs are interspersed with a host of illustrated period advertisements, including a few for photographers, as well as printed material about the benefits of setting up shop in the town. Silver prints, various sizes, single images measuring 9x7 inches (22.8x17.7 cm.), and the reverse, with paired and quadruple images in that identical sheet size, many with caption information in the negative. Thick oblong folio, gilt-lettered leatherette, worn; front hinge cracked, preliminaries lightly stained, contents otherwise bright. 1898

Additional Details

Acquired from Lee Gallery, Boston in 1997.
An early album demonstrating how photography was employed to promote this small city with big ambitions. The printed matter is quite detailed and lists schools, churches and other social amenities as well as highlighting Brocktonians's "spirit of progress," the "great opportunities for young men," as well as the functioning utility and sewerage systems.
