Just one week after the hanging of John Brown, a group of influential businessmen met and planned a public demonstration against disunion and sectionalism. Organized by James Beekman and Joshua Henry, a large petition was gotten up and a meeting at the Academy of Music on 14th Street planned. Included in this group is a broadside on blue paper which is a printed version of the petition; a printed invitation to the gathering signed in print by the organizers; an Autograph Invitation from Beekman to Rev. Vermilye along with a printed invitation; plus several envelopes containing the items listed above.
