Additional Details

This real estate flier promises that in Los Angeles, "there is no Jim-Crowism, no separate schools--a man is a man in California" and "finer homes owned by Colored People are found here than any place in the world." For those who ask "What are the colored people doing in California," a variety of occupations and businesses are listed, including doctors, lawyers, motion picture companies, firemen, and more. Two of the firm's officers are shown: General Manager K.C. Venerable, "a thorough race man, whose tireless efforts in securing the best homes for members of the race are nationally known"; and Assistant Manager Paul McClendon, a former sergeant in the 25th U.S. Infantry (one of the Buffalo Soldier regiments).

The company was in business from at least 1917 to 1922, but McClendon was not discharged from the army until March 1919, and the only Bookertee ads we find with this 203 Wilson Building address are in the Dallas Express of February and March 1920.
