Cape May, and other areas in South Jersey were home to several black townships and early black enterprise. Among them, in five South Jersey counties -- Port Republic, Morris Beach, Newtonville and Elwood in Atlantic County; Whitesboro in Cape May County; Gouldtown and Springtown in Cumberland County; Small Gloucester, Swedesboro and Elsmere in Gloucester County; and Lawnside and Chesilhurst in Camden County. Many were near the water. Here an entrepreneur rents bathing suits for visitors to the beach.
