Additional Details

These hand-held fans, made by a variety of printers, were created as promotional materials for a variety of apparently Black-owned businesses, all clearly targeted to Black consumers. The one which appears oldest is a tribute to the late Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, and was produced for a funeral home in Hinton, WV, probably not long after Carver's 1943 death. 6 were produced for funeral homes in Virginia: one with a portrait of Martin Luther King, one showing King with John and Robert Kennedy, and the others with generic scenes of worship. One depicting singer Mahalia Jackson was produced for a funeral home in Louisville, KY. 6 were printed for a variety of businesses in neighboring Durham, Carrboro, and Chapel Hill, NC, including a beauty parlor, grocery, furniture store, barber shop, and two funeral homes, all using designs featuring smiling children. The lot includes very little duplication: one design (three children, titled "Little Gardeners") is printed up for two different businesses in Georgia and North Carolina, and the Crawford-Garrett funeral home in Halifax, VA is represented by 3 different designs.
