quite scarce, oclc locating only four copies of this edition and none of the first edition of 1934. A small but substantial history of life insurance companies and cooperatives from the last decade of the 19th century to 1937. Despite the writer's beginning date of 1893, we found that there was in fact an earlier attempt to insure people in the African American community: The African Insurance Company of Philadelphia is the first known black insurance company. It was established in 1810; its president was Joseph Randolph, treasurer, Carey Porter and secretary, William Coleman. It was capitalized at $5000 with 50 shares. We could find no record of its incorporation, and was probably quite limited.
