Additional Details

An elaborately produced history of the Standard Life Insurance Company founded by Heman Perry (1873-1929). Perry, the son a Texas farmer, built an insurance empire which by 1922 was worth over 22 million dollars and employed over 2500 workers--all black. Standard ran a half dozen other businesses, all black-owned. Unfortunately, like many businesses that diversify, Standard Life went under in 1925, a victim of its own success.
