Clilan Bethany Powell (1894-1977) graduated from the Howard School of Medicine in 1920. He later became co-owner of Harlem's Amsterdam News in 1936, was a founder and president of Victory Mutual Life Insurance Company, and was active in national presidential campaigns. These photographs document some of his public appearances with Eugene H. Dibble Jr., Louis T. Wright, Emil Laclerio, Kenneth B. Clark, Ralph Bunche, and others. In one (illustrated), he is shown chatting with Ambassador W. M. Q. Halm of Ghana at a Washington dinner for Negro businessmen. Two of the photos bear the inked stamps of P.H. Polk of the Tuskegee Institute.
