Additional Details

This pamphlet tells the story of "a product which has become the Pride of a People." It was founded by Kit Baldwin, who was raised on an Alabama cotton farm, was trained as a plumber at the Tuskegee Institute, worked 22 years as a Chicago postal clerk, and launched his own ice cream business in 1939. He is described as "the lone Negro to survive the pressure from the old establishments which crush all probable competitors at their inception." The pamphlet is illustrated with 8 photographs showing Baldwin, his factory, his all-black administrative and clerical staff, and a delivery truck. It concludes with a long listing of businesses which stocked Baldwin's products, most of them on Chicago's South Side. The company remains a large and successful black-owned business as Baldwin Richardson Foods.
