Additional Details

Three classic images: the portrait of Madam Walker as reproduced from the photographic portrait taken by Washington photographer Addison Scurlock, the image of Madam Walker's birthplace, a humble cabin; and the hot comb, used by many black women to straighten their hair. Early versions of this type of comb were heated by placing on the stove.
