Additional Details

a scarce and important booklet, providing a fascinating look into the complex rules, regulations and ritual, involved with the Madam C.J. Walker Company's "union." Madam Walker combined the "togetherness" of the Avon Ladies with the ritual more closely associated with sororal groups like the Sisters of Tabor. Profanity or bad manners could easily result in immediate dismissal; and there were provisions for a "trial" of a member who had broken any of the cardinal rules. Madam Walker's was a highly unorthodox company, which in many ways anticipated the involvement in the personal lives of its workers that IBM and other mega-companies began in the 1950s.
