Additional Details

The Bruce Funeral Home was founded by George W. Bruce (1890-1959). In 1940, his daughter Maxine married Frederick Pickett Stark (1913-1996), who then graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in 1947. This archive mainly relates to the management of the funeral home by the Starks:

7 pieces of the company's printed ephemera--4 illustrated fans, an illustrated 1975 calendar, a burial insurance application card, and a pad of authorization slips to take charge of remains.

Frederick Stark's mortuary school textbook, 3 grade reports, and graduation program; 5 licensing documents, 1959-1974; and a partial fire inspection report from 1964.

Family papers including 2 portraits of Maxine and Frederick; their wedding announcement; George Bruce's 1959 funeral program; and a copy of Frederick's birth certificate.

12 pieces of general mortuary ephemera, including the printed minutes of the Colored Funeral Directors of Virginia from 1932-1974 and undated.
