Additional Details

Chowan Beach was a Black-owned family vacation resort launched by J.E. Reid in 1926. It was located on the Chowan River near Winton in northeastern North Carolina. It reached its full glory in the 1940s through the early 1960s with a restaurant, concert hall and other facilities; B.B. King, James Brown and Sam Cooke performed there. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 led to a steady decline and the gates were shut in 2004.

This poster features a panoramic view of the resort, and promises "Dancing--Boating--Cottages--Refreshments & Sandwiches . . . Come and Bring the Family--Give them a Treat." No other examples traced in OCLC or at auction.
