Additional Details

Charles Clinton Spaulding (1874-1952), businessman and civic leader was only 26 years old when he was asked to help reorganize the foundering North Carolina Mutual and Provident Loan Company founded in 1898. By 1907 the company had more than 100,000 policy holders. It not only survived the Depression, but expanded when others were failing. Spaulding, an "unabashed capitalist" once told Time Magazine, "What we want is not Negro business, but businesses run by Negroes."
