(BUSINESS--TAVERNS.) Papers of the National Negro Licensed Beverage Association, Western Pennsylvania Branch. 16 manuscript and typescript leaves plus one printed pamphlet in one folder; some with moderate wear. Pittsburgh area, 1960-1961

Additional Details

The records of a tavern-owners' trade association hoping to find strength in numbers when dealing with unscrupulous beer distributors. Included are:

A typescript list of 11 participating taverns, with 9 of them in Pittsburgh and the others in nearby suburbs.

Artistically rendered pencil logo of the "Negro Tavern Owners Ass. of Western Pennsylvania," 11¾ x 9¼ inches.

14 pages of typescript and manuscript meeting agendas and notes, March-July 1961 and undated. One meeting discusses a planned boycott: "Report on Rolling Rock beer. Mr. Tito said he did not have any job open. He would have to fire someone or create a job. . . . If we want to boycott, I would like to wait until after the pickinec to start." An agenda states "Discuss: the prices each member pays for beer." A blank form suggests that "each owner sign his name and the price he is paying for premium and local beer, in order that we might discuss these prices among one another." A handwritten list of mostly local beers might be a result of this survey--or just the order for the association's picnic: "30 Duck [Duke], 10 Iron City, 30 Rolling Rock, 5 Duck quart, 10 Bud, 5 Black Labor [Label], 10 Fort Pitt."

The printed articles of incorporation and by-laws of the national organization, 8 pages, April 1960.
