A fascinating look into the complex ritual involved with what was essentially a "sororal" association, referred to here as the "Union." Madame Walker borrowed from the "feel good," "togetherness" of the Avon Ladies and added to it some of the ritual of the Sisters of Tabor. In what amounts to an almost "Masonic" rite, the sergeant-at-arms removes "those who are not entitled to be therein," the roll is then called and all stand and sing the Madame C. J. Walker "Hairdressers' Ode." Business is conducted, and another song "God be with you till we meet again" is sung before the meeting is adjourned. The Union had a strict Constitution and by-laws that made clear that a Beauty Culturalist's conduct had implications for her "larger life."
