A detailed Mexican report on California before the transfer and the Gold Rush. The table reports on the population, livestock, and crop production at each presidio and mission. San Francisco reported 371 residents and 56,110 heads of cattle; the Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles was much larger with 1,388 residents and 38,624 heads of cattle (most in the region) while the most populous missions were under the Jurisdiccion de San Diego. "Guzman . . . was well informed of the activities of the Franciscan monasteries in Alta California, and his report and recommendations on the economy of the region are of great interest"--Streeter sale IV:2467.
