first edition, probably first issue. In 1769, Gaspar de Portolá began the first European overland expedition to Alta California, culminating with the establishment of a presidio at Monterey in June 1770. Portolá returned to Mexico on 10 August with news of his exploits, and this report was issued six days later. It was issued in both folio form for official distribution, and quarto for public consumption, with the present folio form apparently coming first. Cowan 1933, page 199 ("one of the earliest works relating to Upper California"); Graff 1264; Hammond, Noticias de California (establishing the first issue); Medina, Mexico 5330; Palau 84307; Streeter sale IV:2438; Wagner, Spanish Southwest 150; Zamorano Eighty 35 ("about half a dozen copies of the folio edition are known").
