Additional Details

A university thesis on the geography of Baja California, attempting to determine whether it was an island or a peninsula. It is sometimes attributed to Marburg professor Johann Adolf Hartmann, who supervised the project. The author, Johann Georg Gemeling or Gmelin (1709-1755), studied at the University of Tübingen, and by 1739 was teaching at the University of Saint Petersburg. He later published a volume of travels in Siberia. "One of the rarest and least known of the early works on California"--Cowan 1914, page 95. European Americana 739/118; Howes G211 ("c"); Sabin 26849; Wagner, Spanish Southwest 108; 4 copies in OCLC, only one in America (all sources call for only 30 pages). None known at auction.
