Additional Details

Diary of a 5-month tour of California and other points by affluent Brooklyn stockbroker George Skidmore Hendrickson (1856-1931). He was semi-retired, had lost his wife in 1911, and his son was grown. He joined a party of friends led by Augustus Van Cortlandt (1855-1912) of Hempstead, Long Island. The party went west by rail, stopping at Chicago and the Grand Canyon before arriving in San Bernardino, CA. From there, they spent three months in California, staying at Coronado (near San Diego), Pasadena (near Los Angeles), Monterey, and San Francisco. They toured extensively in the surrounding towns by chauffeured cars, attended charity balls, golfed, and watched numerous polo matches in addition to seeing all of the sights. The return trip featured stops in Salt Lake City, Pike's Peak, and Chicago. The writing style is breezy and enthusiastic--Hendrickson had visited California on other occasions with his late wife, and met old acquaintances on a regular basis.
