first edition, first issue. The inscription reads "Dear Fred. We waved the flag together on Shasta summit. Never forget it, or your friend, Clarence King." King's account of the ascent of Mount Shasta appears on pages 230-245, accompanied by a party of 4 including Frederick A. Clark: "Before quitting the ridge, Fred Clark and I climbed together out upon the highest pinnacle, a trachyte needle rising a few feet above the rest, and so small we could barely balance there together, but we stood a moment and waved the American flag, looking down over our shoulders eleven thousand feet" (page 239).
