This apparently unpublished history was found among the papers of J. Goldsborough Bruff (1804-1889), the noted artist of the Gold Rush, though it does not appear to be in his hand. It begins with Cortez and extends through the birth of the California Republic in 1846. See lot 57 for the related papers. Provenance: Charles Hamilton sale, 19 December 1974, lot 46, to the consignor.
