San Francisco's City College and its new Chemical and Metallurgical Laboratory are described in the 6 July 1866 issue of the Daily Alta California newspaper. The green 3-cent George Washington revenue stamp on verso was issued in 1862 and was in use through 1871; it is inscribed "NMK 1866." Oddly, it is marked for "For'n Exchange"; a 2-cent stamp was more typical for photographs.
