Additional Details

first edition, second issue, with a cancel title changing the date from 1831 to 1833. In 1828, Pattie was part of just the second American wagon party to reach California. They encountered tribes of American Indians who had never before seen whites, and were jailed by the Mexican government in San Diego under suspicion as spies. His father died in prison in 1830, but James was released to aid in vaccinating the populace against a raging smallpox epidemic. "The first printed narrative of an overland journey to California. . . . Both the first and second editions of the Pattie narrative are of extreme rarity"--Zamorano Eighty 60. Field 1186 ("narrated with spirit and candor"); Howes P123 ("c", variant with 1833 Wood copyright on verso of title page); Graff 3217; Streeter sale, lot 3139; Wagner-Camp 45:2.
