The photographs are well captioned on the leaves, and many also bear pen captions on verso. Many of the conductors and maintenance workers are named in the captions. Some photographs are captioned with dates extending from 1863 to 1911, with the earliest ones apparently being copy prints. Most of the photographs appear to be from Oakland, though some are from neighboring Alameda, and others may be from beyond.
