Additional Details

This Grand Army of the Republic parade in downtown Los Angeles featured hundreds of grizzled veterans carrying their regimental banners. One reads "California and Nevada G.A.R. Veteran Drum Corps of Los Angeles." Another reads "Department of Kansas." Veterans from Delaware, Minnesota, Vermont, and Indiana can be seen. The date was most likely 11 September 1912, the culmination of the G.A.R.'s national encampment which was held in Los Angeles that week.

If we understand our geography correctly, we are looking northeast up South Spring Street toward West 2nd Street and the present City Hall. Signs for the Lyceum Theater (established 1911) and Hollenbeck Hotel are visible, as well as for Christopher the Caterers at 241 South Spring and C.H. Baker's Hanan Shoes outlet next door at 239 South Spring (which moved in 1913).
