Glidden & Williams launched a packet line of clipper ships from Boston to San Francisco in 1852. These cards advertised specific departures for the west, featuring the ships Mary E. Balch, Grace Darling, Belvedere, R.B. Forbes, Ringleader, Wild Rover, S.C. Grant, Winfield Scott, Guiding Star, Rival, Harry of the West, and Thacher Magoun (dates available upon request). Each is elaborately printed, and all but one are illustrated with the Glidden and Williams white and gold pennant with red star. The Guiding Star card is also illustrated with a small view of the San Francisco waterfront.
