Additional Details

The full-page drawing is titled "O.W. Wheler's Camp, Cal., May 22d 1855." It depicts a camp in the woods, likely that of cattle merchant Oliver W. Wheeler (1830-1890). Wheeler was then beginning his career as a roving California merchant who bought up sickly cattle from westward-bound emigrants. In 1867, he would lead the first herd over the Chisholm Trail from Texas to Kansas.
