Additional Details

The California Star was San Francisco's first newspaper, its first issue appearing in January 1847. This issue provides the latest Mexican War news, including a long report on the Battle of Contreras, and a mention of the death of firearms innovator Samuel Hamilton Walker at Huamantla. In June 1848, the Star would cease publication when its employees went off in search of gold. It later resumed publication as the Daily Alta California. This extra not recorded in Wagner, California Imprints 3 or Kimble, History of California Newspapers, page 276.
