Additional Details

The 1906 earthquake and resulting fire destroyed all three of San Francisco's morning newspaper presses. The next morning, in an effort to get crucial information out to the public, the three bitter rivals collaborated on this joint issue, printed across the bay at the Oakland Tribune. A more dramatic newspaper issue could hardly be imagined. The lead article notes that "the men worked like fiends to combat the laughing, roaring, onrushing fire demon." Another article offers the grim prognosis: No Hope Left for the Safety of Any Buildings. San Francisco seems doomed to entire destruction." Futile efforts to dynamite buildings to form a buffer are described, as are several individual tales of tragedy and heroism.
