Additional Details

The Maryknoll School for Japanese-Americans Catholics was founded in Los Angeles in 1920. The photo was taken in the banquet room of the Kawafuku Cafe, which by many accounts later became the first restaurant in America to serve sushi.

This photograph was taken by the important Japanese-American photographer Toyo Miyatake (1895-1979), who was later incarcerated at the Manzanar internment camp, taking surreptitious photos with makeshift equipment before securing the right to serve as official camp photographer; he later published "Two Views of Manzanar" in collaboration with Ansel Adams.
