"In this important law providing for the complete secularization of the California missions, the Mexican Congress took cognizance of a strong feeling in California against the missions and set in motion a chain of events that led to their final abolition. Parochial clergy not belonging to any order were to replace the regular clergy, they were to be salaried from the pious fund, and no fees were to be collected for any purpose"--Streeter sale, IV:2468.
