Additional Details

Early views of the massive sequoias in what is now Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Plate IX (illustrated) shows a pack of camels passing through the grove, remnants of a group brought to the Southwest in 1856 as part of the ill-fated United States Camel Corps. Vischer was the artist and publisher of these attractive views; the lithography was by Charles C. Kuchel. This was Vischer's first publication, and he became disenchanted with the lithographic process; his later publications featured photographs of his drawings. Cowan 1933, page 662; Greenwood 1740; Howes V132 ("b"); Peters, California on Stone, pages 169-171 and 199-202; Streeter sale V:2877. Only one other copy sold at auction since a Swann sale, 21 May 1970, lot 42.
