William Penn Woodbury (1832-1904) went to work in the lumber mills of California in 1862, sending his wages to his wife and daughter back home in Maine. Over the course of two years, he sent 7 letters to his wife''s brother from all over the northern part of California: Grass Valley, Pacheco, Strawberry Valley, and finally San Francisco. His first letter home to brother-in-law Daniel Perkins noted: "It is a very good place for a man, after all, that has no wife nor sweetheart, nor dont want any, nor anything that is sweet." He described the scene in his Strawberry Valley boarding house: "I can''t write, there is about 20 men reading, dancing, playing cards and most every thing els." Homesick and worn out from hard work, he returned to Maine in 1865. with--more than 50 letters written to the Perkinses in Temple, ME, dated 1856-65, most from other relatives in Maine, including some from William''s wife Mary A. (Perkins) Woodbury.
