first edition, preceding the more common 6-volume octavo set issued later that year. The arrangement of this edition varies widely, but this attractive set is complete with all parts, including the 61-page "Projet d'Un Corps d'Histoires du Nouveau Monde," which "is often wanting, but is necessary to form a complete copy"--Field. The first two volumes of this set are a history of Canada, including an extensive natural history section, and the third volume is Charlevoix's Canadian travels. "One of the most important works there is relating to Canada. It contains not only what the author saw himself, but he has collected from the best authorities, and with great judgment, every thing important relating to the history of the country"--Rich 1774:19. Also includes material on the French settlements along the Mississippi. Field 282; Howes C307; Lande McGill 125; Sabin 12135; this edition not listed in TPL .
