Additional Details

Chignecto was a key point in the various wars between the English and French for control of Nova Scotia, and was the site of at least ten battles, raids, and skirmishes between 1749 and 1757. Charles Lawrence had established the fort that bore his name during Father Le Loutre's War in 1750, and later was appointed governor of Nova Scotia. He had apparently written to Pepperell, the leader of the forces which had captured Louisbourg in 1745, for assistance. Pepperell replied: "I sincerely wish that all the English coloneyes would unite to send forces to your assistance & drive off your troublesome neighbours, or bring them to terms. I am of the opinion that the well setteling & fortifying Nova Scotia will be (under God) the means of preserving all ye English America from the hands of our encroaching enemys." He also sends a schooner full of trade goods from the estate of his late son.
