In the wake of the failed Lower Canada Rebellion, Canadian patriot Robert Nelson fled to Vermont and issued his premature declaration of Canadian independence, boldly printed here in English translation by a newspaper near the New York-Quebec border. Canada did not gain independence until 1867.
