The Sensitive Plant. 12 plates, title-page, and 79 decorative initials by Laurence Housman, beautifully hand-colored by gloria cardew. 8vo, crushed cherry morocco with central single gilt filleted panels, floral device in corners, spine with raised bands, lettering in 2 compartments and repeated floral motif in 4, repeated on turn-ins by james macdonald, New York (signed on rear turn-in), spine slightly but evenly darkened, visible but not deeply obtrusive indication of dampstaining to lower half of covers, does not affect contents; all edges trimmed and gilt; bookplate. copy number one of only ten printed on vellum for the guild of women-binders, colored by hand and signed by gloria cardew. Cardew was an extremely talented watercolorist whose work was sought for delicate hand-coloring of exquisite books in the 1890s, mostly commissioned by the London bookseller, Frank Karslake, and a few for the Vale Press and the Guild of Women Bookbinders.
