Additional Details

Marie Stopes was a pioneer in the field of family planning in the pre-Planned Parenthood era. She not only opened a clinic in North London in 1921 providing services to underprivileged women, but adapted a horse-drawn caravan to reach those in more remote communities. Undeterred by critics who attacked her methods, her sex, and her lack of medical training, she persevered and became an icon of women's reproductive rights in the United Kingdom and the United States.
