An abolitionist newspaper founded by William Lloyd Garrison in 1831, "The Liberator" was published weekly in Boston until 1866. Its circulation was relatively small, at only about 3,000, but approximately three-fourths of its readers were African-Americans, as the periodical demanded the emancipation of slaves. Unsurprisingly, the newspaper came under criticism from several state legislatures in the form of excessive fines for distributors. However, Garrison had the honor and opportunity, in 1865, to run a victory column with the acceptance of the Thirteenth Amendment abolishing slavery in the United States.
