The design for this uncommonly large plastic case is based on John Vanderlyn's (1775-1852) painting located in the rotunda of the United States Capitol. Vanderlyn was a portraitist and student of Gilbert Stuart. According to Michele and Clifford Krainik, "The Landing of Columbus" is one of the most beautiful and sought-after of all Union cases. . . it represents a tour de force for the engravers and the case manufacturer. The design appears on the obverse and reverse of the case." See:
