Exquisite quarter-plate daguerreotype of a smiling woman seated in a flowing riding habit upon her horse; in a full leather case. Mid-1850s

Additional Details

A graceful image of a spirited young woman, which stands apart in the iconography of daguerreian portraiture. Photographic representations of women have traditionally been circumscribed by social conventions of the era so that women were typically depicted within a family context, as wives, mothers, sisters, or daughters, or alternatively, in a work setting, domestic or otherwise. The daguerreotype offered here, however, offers a novel point-of-view depicting a lady of aristocratic bearing, who is not posing with her husband or father, but on her horse--an animal associated with freedom and power.<
