William George Helsby began his career as a daguerreotypist at a young age, partnering with his brother, Thomas, on a studio in Montevideo in 1843. In 1849 he moved his operations to Valpariso, Chile where he opened a studio right next door to Vance & Mason's. He remained in Chile until 1860 when he moved again to Liverpool, England.
