J. E. Mayall began his career in Philadelphia where he ran a daguerreotype studio and lectured in chemistry. In 1846, he relocated to London where he opened the American Daguerreotype Institution. He quickly became known for his stunning portraits and he photographed many notables, Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre among them.<
